The Ghana Red Cross Society is a volunteer based humanitarian organisation in Ghana and also an auxiliary to government, the society  continuous to  support  the government’s efforts in the areas of social interventions ( eg distrubtion of food packs, emergency Response, Health education, social mobilization, risk communication, media sensitisation, community engagement and Water Sanitation and Hygiene Project(Ghana-WASH) in communities.

Today  8th  May 2022, marks a very important day in the History of the Red Cross  and Red Crescent Society in the World. is a World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, a global day to celebrate the uniqueness and unity of  International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. This year, celebration is to be  kindness in the picture and encouraging people around the world under the theme #BeHumanKIND.

World Red Cross Day is an international day that is dedicated to alleviating human suffering, upholding human dignity, protecting life, and preventing emergencies and natural disasters such as flood, epidemics, and earthquakes. The fundamental principles recognized during World Red Cross Day are impartiality, humanity, independence, neutrality, voluntary, universality, and unity.

World Red Cross Day is meant to inspire, facilitate, and promote all humanitarian activities that are carried out by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and National Societies which are its members. This is the day when members of the international Red Cross movement raise the need in assisting suffering people. People are reminded of the need of protecting their lives as well as the dignity of the victims of any armed conflicts and all situations of violence.

Every year 8th May is celebrated as World Red Cross Day to honor the International Red Cross Crescent Movement founder Henry Dunant, who was born on this day in 1828. National Societies that are affiliates to ICRC celebrates the World Red Cross Day in their countries to raise the need of protecting life. This event highlights international services such as the reunion of separated family members through the Red Cross. All attendees of this even learn about the founder of the Red Cross, Henry Dunant, and are motivated and encouraged to take part in life saving activities.

Ghana Red Cross Society is celebrating this year World Red Cross Day, with a financial support from the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) to make a  donation of  non- food items  (Hygiene Kits) to two hundred and fifty families (250) who were displaced at the Apiatse Community. The whole nation is much a ware of the recent chemical Explosion which took precious lives away and caused a huge destruction to buildings and properties on the 20th of January 2022. Ghana Red Cross with the support of the International Federation had made a cash transfer donation of  GH¢ 376,000.00, 400 Hygiene  Kits , 540 Dignity kits and Used Clothes to the  affect households. While we celebrate this World Red Cross Day today, we are  also gadding up  the following items 250 dignity kits, 200 hygiene kits and 100 pieces mosquito nets to 250  displaced people.

During World Red Cross Day local heroes that have made an invaluable impact on life protection are recognized in various categories such as law enforcement, military, fire and rescue, community champion, and humanitarian awards. Various organizations are recognized based on the effort in life protection. Local communities are inspired to take part in voluntary activities to protect human beings.

The Society wish to encourage every citizen to use this occasion to visit the needy  in society to make a kind donation to support them and also  treated mall  with dignity in line with the international norms and  treat all people with hospitality, dignity, and humanity.

Colleagues Red Cross members, ladies and gentlemen of the media and people  of Apiatse, I thank you all for coming to  this important event and it is my sincere wish  that this great joint effort to serve the vulnerable in communities in Ghana  will countinue to foster more collaboration to acheive the well needed result for mankind.
